It’s summertime in Utah again. Summer is a time for activities like hiking, swimming or spending afternoons out in the park for outdoor time in the sun. With the beginning of Utah’s summer weather, pet owners need to get their pets ready for the hot weather months ahead.
Hot weather pet care is often seen as an issue of common sense by many pet owners. However it might slip your mind that animals have special hot weather care needs that humans do not. If you’d like to prepare for summer pet care, here is a list of reminders to help you keep your pet happy and healthy this summer:
- Animals DO NOT sweat the same way that humans do to regulate their temperature. Do not leave your pet in a locked car for any period of time. In minutes your car reaches dangerous temperatures.
- Dogs may experience heat stroke in the summer months. Keep an eye out for unexplained hyper excitement, excessive panting and heavy salivation. If you think your dog might have the symptoms of heat stroke, contact your vet as soon as possible.
- Provide adequate cool water and a shady spot that is easy to access for your pet.
- With mosquitoes in the air, make sure to visit your veterinarian for flea and heartworm medications. Preventative medications can prevent serious health conditions caused by flea or heartworms.
- Keep your pet properly groomed to prevent matted fur that might provide a favorable environment for skin infections.
- If you notice that your pet has round, red spots that have a puss like appearance, visit your veterinarian. Your pet might be having an allergic reaction.
The warmth of the hot summer months can be enjoyed by you and your pet if you consider their summer pet care needs. Your pet can have fun this summer if you make sure you provide it with water, shade and the regular tender loving care you always give. Please feel free to contact the Humane Society of Utah or your local veterinarian if you have any specific questions about summer pet care. Enjoy your summer!
